What Is Somatic Bodywork and How It Helps You Set Boundaries as a Highly Sensitive Person

When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Life is different when you are highly sensitive.

The way you perceive life is so complex, layered, and challenging—in ways that are sometimes hard to explain to anyone who doesn’t share the same sensitivity.

You can spend hours bathing in the rustling of the leaves, in awe of the light shimmering through—amazed by how much life can dance within the corners of your eyes.

You can spend hours deciphering what that answer meant, because the meaning of the words doesn’t match the tone of their voice, the lines on their face, or the contraction you felt in your gut for hours after.

As you swing between your rational mind and your gut’s intuition, a whole process of healing happens. And life keeps unfolding in the background, often requiring even more of your energy.

From Sensitivity to Sensory Overload

This happens every day. You can feel at one with God and the Cosmos when your sensitivity has the right place to be—and in the same day feel drained to your bones when your sensitivity clashes with the disconnection and numbness of the world around you. For those experiencing sensory processing sensitivity, this inner movement can sometimes feel like too much—like a constant dance between openness and sensory overload.

The Burnout Cycle

Over time, this intensity can lead to burnout. Especially for highly sensitive women and creatives, constantly processing emotions, environments, and subtle cues can become overwhelming. Your nervous system is always working and without the right boundaries and grounding, sensitivity can shift from a gift into exhaustion.

To Feel or Not to Feel

So what’s the key to the seemingly unsolvable conundrum: to feel or not to feel?

Become a tree. Grow roots. ground yourself through your legs and feet, become strong and flexible, bend with the wind, and don’t break.Ground yourself so deeply within your body that no amount of disconnection, doubt, or emotion can move you from your centre.

What Is Somatic Bodywork and How It Can Help

This is where somatic bodywork has become an incredible ally for me—offering tools, a daily practice to rely on, and the gift of reminding my cells what it feels like to be feel everything and feel safe.

Somatic bodywork is a body-based approach to healing. It invites you to tune into your body and understand what its sensations, ailments, and symptoms are trying to communicate. Rather than analysing everything through the mind, somatic healing brings you back into direct relationship with your body.

Somatic Bodywork and Boundaries

Tuning into my body has given me the awareness that I need to set boundaries—and how to do it in a way that feels right for me, while remaining clear and kind in the world.

When I am clear about my own edges and boundaries in my body—when I can feel where I end and the rest begins—it becomes easier to trust my sensations and my intuition, to ask the right questions, and to stand my ground.

For highly sensitive people, boundaries are not just mental—they are deeply physical, somatic experiences and are much needed.

Somatic bodywork has taught me how to inhabit my body—and to feel that I have the right to be in it, fully.

To feel, without being overwhelmed.
To stay open, without losing myself.
To experience sensitivity, without it becoming too much.
